Cleaning Your Closet:5 Steps To Love Your Clothes…Again

Sometimes you just can't see the forest thru the trees. Cleaning your closet can help you discover buried treasure. 5 steps to love your clothes...again.

The season is finally changing. The sun is shinning. The days and nights are getting warmer. From the black depths of your closet you wake your summer wardrobe from hibernation. You are looking forward to getting out of the heavy and black clothes of winter and oh so ready to wear tanks and shorts and let the air touch your skin without frost bite. The euphoria of the moment soon changes to fear and loathing.

“I have nothing nice to wear!”

But wait! Don’t go running to the closest mall just yet. What if I told you, you didn’t have to spend a dime and could have the summer wardrobe you always wanted. What if I told you, you already have it and don’t even know it. It’s going to take some work to get the love back into this relationship but it will be worth it. Give me one day and I will show you how.

Are you ready?

Let’s get to work!

Sometimes you just can't see the forest thru the trees. Cleaning your closet can help you discover buried treasure. 5 steps to love your clothes...again.

1. Deep clean

This is going to get messy! Everything needs to come out. Out of every closet, out of the dressers, off the floor and out from under beds. This includes shoes, purses and yes, the intimates. Every item needs to be touched and evaluated.

  • Have you worn it in the last two years?
  • Is it still in good condition or starting to look worn out?
  • Do you love it?
  • Does it fit right now?

Bag everything that you discard immediately and remove from the premises. If you keep it hanging around, chances are some items will make it back into your closet.

2. Sort & Organize

Start making piles. Lots of piles. Sort out skirts, shorts, tops, pants, etc. Once you have everything organized by type of clothing, make more piles from your piles. For example, tops can now be sorted by length of sleeve, occasion and colour. Follow through for all remaining piles.

3. Thin out More!

At this point, you should be standing in the middle of a disaster area. But trust me, there is a method to this madness. It’s time for the second weeding. Starting with the biggest mountains, go through and see if there are any duplicates that can now be discarded. If you are anything like me, you will find items that you kept from step one that can now be tossed as well.

For example, I had a lot of black pants that made it through the first sort but once I could see that I had 2 more pairs that were nicer and in better condition, those could go.

At this point, you should have found some hidden gems you forgot about. This makes you start to feel all warm and fuzzy. You are well on your way to rekindling the love.

4. Style Outfits/Take Pics

Now you can pack away all the winter ware and store it. But not so fast with the spring/summer stuff. This is the fun part and what brings the fire back into your relationship with your clothes.

This is when you get to play dress-up. Okay, you are probably too tired for that at this point, so just have a clean spot on your bed or the back of a closet door for styling.

Right now, everything is spread before you like a buffet dinner. Match, mix, and create looks for all different occasions. See the versatility in what you already have.

If you are anything like me, then you need a helping hand with this step. Go on Pinterest. Find outfits that you like and try to mimic them with what you have.

Here are some of the boards I like:

Once you make an outfit look the way you like, take a picture of it in your phone. You will appreciate the time and stress you save the next time you have to get ready in a flash. No more “I don’t have anything to wear” or making your bedroom have a heap of discarded outfits on the floor.

Here is one of the outfits I made with a long forgotten dress from the back of the closet. This is definitely going to get some wear now.

One more step before you can return everything back to its rightful place.

5. Make A List

Now that you know everything you have, you conversely know what you are missing to complete the outfits you were putting together in step 4. Make a list of what you need and carry it with you. Have it ready for the next time you go shopping. This way you won’t come home with another white tank or black pants when you already have them.

When you have completed all the steps, you will have a clean closet and a phone filled with lots of pictures of outfits ready to go.

  1. I got rid of a bunch of stuff. Then I bought a few new t-shirts. 🙂 And I love doing clothing sets on Polyvore. And Pinterest. I love Pinterest more than almost anything ever. 🙂

    1. I’m just getting into it. I especially like when people do all the thinking for me by posting sets. Please reply with your link for Pinterest so I can follow you.

    1. Thank you for visiting! I’m 50 so there was a lot of crap in there. Of course accumulating things in different sizes, holding on to the dream they might fit again one day, was a majority of the giant dump! Lol

  2. I just had to go buy a new bathing suit – mine was so old it billowed out like a balloon in the water, making me look like an irate jellyfish. Ugh – not a fun experience but I survived. Now I’m on a diet, of course.
