Have you noticed that some blogs on WordPress dot com have the StumbleUpon button but when you go look at your sharing settings, you can't find the option to add StumbleUpon? Have you wondered how they did it? It is super easy to do and this tutorial will show you how you can add the StumbleUpon social sharing icon button in less than a minute.

10 STEPS TO ADD A STUMBLEUPON ICON TO YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA SHARING BUTTONS ON WORDPRESS.COM

1.Find a free of copyright, StumbleUpon icon image that you want to use and upload it to your media files on your blog. Resize the image to 16px X 16px.

2.On your dashboard, go to settings, then click on sharing.

3.Click on “Add a new service”.

You should now see a pop up like this:screen-shot-2016-12-06-at-5-39-07-pm

4.For Service Name, enter “StumbleUpon”.

5.Copy the following URL and paste on the line, “Sharing URL”.

https://www.stumbleupon.com/submit?url=%post_full_url%

6.Copy and paste the URL for the media file uploaded in step one on the line, “Icon URL”.

7.You should now see StumbleUpon in your list of available services. Drag it to the “Enabled Services” section.

8.Arrange your social sharing buttons and choose a display style.

9.Click to save changes.

10.Test your new StumbleUpon button.

You can repeat this process for any other social sharing buttons you are missing and wish to have. You may have to test and change the target URL to get the correct sharing process.

For example, the following URL is for Flipboard.

https://share.flipboard.com/bookmarklet/popout?v=2&title=Add%20to%20Magazine%20%E2%80%94%20Flipboard&url=https%3A%2F%2Fshare.flipboard.com%2Fflipit%2Fload%3Fv%3D1.0%26url%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%26title%3D%24%7Btitle%7D&t=1481044890638

Now that you have the StumbleUpon button, you should learn how to use the platform correctly. My bloggy friend Laura from Skinny & Single, has been really successful with getting tons of traffic to her blog from SU. Here is a quick and easy post explaining how she uses StumbleUpon for her blog.

  1. Hi Elena –

I have tried these instructions to the letter, but cannot get this to work. The icon comes up, I drag it in to the usable ones, and within a few seconds, it disappears to a cross. I have tried linking to a URL for the icon on other websites, and also uploading to my media library, and posting URL direct from that. Neither option worked.

Having spent around 3 hours on this, I’m on the brink of giving up. Can you give me ANY help as to what I may be doing wrong. I am a self hosted wordpress site.

If you can point me in the direction at all, it would be much appreciated, as most of the info I have found replicates what you suggest above.

    Many thanks

    1. Hi Diana. This post is specifically for users of the non self-hosted, wordpress platform, configuring the jetpak plugin. I am not sure if it will work for you but the benefit of being self hosted is that there are many plugins that you can easily add that will automatically add the SU button for you. I use Shareholic and Social Warfare on my self-hosted sites, just to name 2. Click on plugins on your dashboard and search for social sharing buttons. Then install.

  2. Hey Elena,

This is great to have, especially for someone like me who likes to switch one of my blogs between self-host and FREEness! I learned how to do this a few months ago and then face palmed myself. It’s soooooo easy to do! Passing this along, pinned and stumbled! Rock on gf!

  3. Very helpful post, Elena! I figured it out quite a while ago (maybe another blogger). I stumbled this post using the SU in my chrome bar. Truth be told, I haven’t used SU very often lately since a lot of bloggers were getting flagged and locked out. It still has to be used sparingly. Thanks for the reminder! I’m going to use this to add flipboard to my sharing icons 🙂
