It’s been 12 years since I’ve visited London. I can’t believe it but it actually feels much longer than that. That was the year 2005. Little did I know that everything would change for me after that trip.
I had just turned 40 and had a space of 10 days in between jobs. My children were little. My debts were big and my clothes were smaller. Lord I wish I was as fat as I thought I was then, now.
I was stuck on the super mom track. Never thinking about myself or what I needed. Life was too busy to think about whether I was happy or not.
Then my family bought me a ticket for my birthday to go see my sister. I couldn’t imagine going. I couldn’t just up and leave my family! But everyone insisted so off I went.
I had been to London before. I lived there for six months through a program offered by my university in 1985. I loved the city. And especially the suburbs my sis lived in. I started to get really excited and even managed to book a few days to Paris.
During that trip, I got to slow down and enjoy the company of myself and other adults. I got to do what I wanted. I didn’t have to look after anyone.
During that trip, I heard loud and clear the voices in my head that said, “You’re not happy.”
When I got home, I found the courage to change the direction of my life. Now, 12 years later, I’m going back again. Will it open my eyes and make me pivot again? I don’t know but if it does, I’ll embrace it.
Look out UK. I’m coming back.
