Have you started a blog? I bet if you are a midlife blogger, you are a little confused and frustrated. Everyday your social media feeds are bombarded by a deluge of super successful bloggers and they all look like they are rocking it. Hard.

When you take a closer look, you realize that most of them are mommy or millennial bloggers. You want to gain traction and make a few bucks too but jeez Louise, what’s that going to take?

Relax. First you have to realize that as a woman over fifty, your blogging journey will not be the same as other bloggers in other age groups.

5 Reasons Midlife Blogging Is Different

1. Our priorities are different. Our lives look completely different than the millennial who still lives at home or the mommy blogger that has an instant, huge audience to speak to on the internet.

Our lives are complex and most of us juggle jobs as well as aging parents and those aforementioned millennials that still rely on use for financial support.

Sometimes it feels like we are being pulled in fifty million directions.

It is not so easy to balance our lives and our blogs.

Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Blog when you can but be super focused and intentional when you do.

FYI: scrolling through your Facebook/Twitter/Pinterest feeds does not count as work.

2. Our work life is winding down. If you are like me, the thought of creating a business that takes all of my time, is not appealing.

So don’t get all green eyed when you see other bloggers building courses, doing webinars, writing books, etc.

Sure, I want to do those things too. But not this week. Lol.

If I have learned anything in the last few years, it is this: I decide when, what and how I grow my blog.

I am not intimidated by the fast track other bloggers are on.

Hey, I love blogging but I sure as hell don’t want it to consume my life.

I’ve done my time and I’m done with “full-time” work. So if this is you too, stop comparing yourself to other bloggers that clearly don’t have the same life vision as you do.

3. We don’t know what we want. After years of taking care of everyone else, it is really hard for us to get inside our heads and truly work out what we want our second halves to look like.

  • Do we want to travel?
  • What do we enjoy to do in our spare time? (Insert chuckle)
  • What does our perfect day look like?

Working with clients, it is obvious that we have trouble setting goals for ourselves when we remove all obstacles.

That is why it is so important to work these things out and get clear with our mission statements on our blogs. If you don’t know what you are about, neither will your audience.

4. Our definition of success is different. Sure that is true for everyone on the planet but I find that my life experience has strongly impacted how I define success for myself.

I honestly don’t give a crap about how others see me, so a perfectly curated Instagram feed is not high on my priority list.

Maybe for you, building a tribe or positively impacting others through stories is important.

Is financial freedom in retirement your end game?

Get clear about how you define success and then you will be able to celebrate milestones in your blogging journey without looking outwardly for validation.

Create the life and blog you want for yourself.

It is time to break free of your limiting beliefs, the shackles of societal expectations and the responsibilities for others we have internalized.

Be free to dream my friends! You’ve earned this.

5. We don’t ask for help. We naturally assume that at this point in our lives we should have our shit together and that we should be the mentors.

This is simply not true.

We can learn from others and it is your duty to continue to learn and grow, no matter what age you are.

The sooner you figure this out, the smoother your blogging journey will be.

This week, I bit the bullet and hired a coach. She’s probably a good 20 years younger than I am. Getting over the mindset that 1) I can learn from someone younger than I am and that 2) asking someone for help does not make me stupid, is empowering.

Get clear about what you do know and what you need help with. Then don’t be afraid to reach out to others and ask for help.

And btw, paying for a coach is frickin awesome and doesn’t make you a loser. It solidifies in your mind that you are committed to what you are building and you are worth it.

I love my life. I love my blogs. Sure I have my ups and downs but they usually happen when I go off track and try to pursue a direction that does not align with my true self.

  1. I too needed to read this today Elena. It is true we have our own unique voice but knowing what direction we want to go in can be quite hard. I like the idea of a mission statement. Thanks for your sensible spot on writing!!

  2. I think Midlife bloggers are the BEST! Everyone is so supportive of each other, but you’re also right about us all having different agendas. It’s hard to find something that you can write about that hasn’t been written a million times before or to relate to fashionistas, foodies, world travellers etc. That being said, I love my little blog and it’s definitely my voice – it’s a place where I can be myself, say my stuff, and connect with a wonderful community – Midlife Blogging Rocks!

    1. You rock! I never worry about whether someone else has written about the same thing. Always remember you have a unique perspective and story that no one else can share.
