If you would have told me 3 years ago that I would be not only be making a full time income blogging but that I would surpass my husband’s salary, I would have said you were crazy. In fact, when I started my first blog, I had no idea that you could even make money blogging. Especially as a midlife woman. But I did it.
I’m not going to lie. Blogging as a woman over fifty is different and in some ways harder. I’m sure you’ve drooled over many a millenials’ blog or Instagram feed and wished you could be all that. They seem so natural and full of spunk.
But I have news for you. You are all that and more, to your readers. And that is what’s important. Unless of course, you forget who you are writing to and try to duplicate what some new mom blogger or fashionable twenty-something year old did on their blog.
Or maybe you just never knew your audience and were throwing spaghetti at the wall, hoping something will stick.
Then blogging gets hard. Real hard.
I know it’s so easy to get distracted as a blogger. There is always something.
- New courses.
- New social media platforms.
- New algorithms.
- New bloggers with higher pageviews than you.
It makes you second guess yourself and you literally go insane.
Insane because you abandon what you are all about in search of the “secret” to successful blogging that everyone else seems to know but you.
First off, let me be blunt. And it’s going to hurt.
There is no secret strategy to make money blogging.
Anyone that says they have the fail proof roadmap to making money blogging is lying. Everyone’s blogging journey is different. And what works for some, may not work for you. You’ve probably figured that out already if you’ve purchased any courses and tried to duplicate what someone else has done to be successful.
So please, stop looking for the holy grail. It does not exist.
The good news, or maybe the bad news depending on how you look at things, is that the success of your blog hinges on only one thing: YOU!
You are the only thing that stands between a blog that fails and a blog that makes money.
So if you have been blogging awhile and your pageviews suck and you still haven’t made a dime, listen up. This is for you.
7 Things Money Making Bloggers Haven’t Told You
- Blogging in the beginning is a lot of hours of really hard work. Very few bloggers are over night success stories. If you dig deep into the background of any 5 or 6 figure blogger, you will find stories of early mornings and late nights while juggling full time regular jobs and family responsibilities. You have to want it bad and find the time to put in the hours working on your own blog. Not surfing social media or reading/commenting on other blogs. Seriously, working on YOUR blog. Nothing else.
- You will fail repeatedly before you hit your stride. This is not my first blog. Or second. And many other successful bloggers failed with their first blogs. The key is to not be afraid to ditch what isn’t working and pivot. Don’t be stubborn. If you are wondering if you are on the right track or not, ask a non-blogger for their honest opinion. Our blogger friends are far too kind sometimes and that holds us back. If you feel in your gut something isn’t working, it’s probably time for a change.
- Reading other blogs is hindering your success. Firstly, as mentioned above, reading other blogs is not considered working and should not be a part of your overall strategy of success. Don’t get me wrong. Reading and commenting on other blogs is nice and helpful for creating a tribe of support. But, if it’s consuming all of your time and distracting you from your own blog, you need to stop until you have a solid foundation on your own blog.
- You must have a well defined avatar first. Yes, there are a few successful “nicheless” blogs out there that write about a lot of different things. But I bet they started with writing about one thing or the opposite, narrowed down after finding what worked. I know you want to have the whole wide world as your potential audience but that is just not feasible. You can’t be everything to everybody. If you are seriously stuck and are having trouble gaining traffic, you need to go back to the beginning and define your reader. If you don’t, then the next step will be impossible to do. You just won’t know what to write.
- You must create pillar content. Every blog is made up of a range of different types of blog posts. There are short posts, long posts, lists posts, review posts and update posts that let your readers get to know you better. But the posts that give your blog authority and keep people coming back for more, are the posts that solve problems and share information/tips. These are the posts that create the solid foundation of your blog. If you have ever struggled with keywords or how to implement strong SEO tactics on your blog, chances are you don’t have any pillar content posts on your blog. And if you haven’t got a clue what your pillar content should be, you haven’t defined your avatar. Go back one step.
- Do not monetize until the previous 2 points are completed. If you don’t know your avatar and you don’t have a solid foundation of killer content on your blog, don’t even bother trying to monetize. You will get frustrated and you will not make any money. Don’t put your horse before the cart. Would you buy a cash register before buying inventory if you were opening a brick and mortar store? I hope not.
- Don’t quit. When you look at the list of really successful bloggers, it can be dis-heartening to realize that they all started a long time ago. You may even think that it was easier then during the hay days of blogging. And it may very well have been. But your one take away should be that they didn’t quit. Because what you may not realize is that there were a million blogs that were abandoned during that same time too. They all had the potential to make it big but they stopped blogging. Who knows, five years from now you could be the money making machine that new bloggers admire…if you are still blogging.
You can make money as a midlife blogger. It’s not too late and there is an audience out there for you. You may have to go back to the beginning. You may have to start all over with a new brand or an entirely new blog. But you can be successful.
This is what you need to do:
- Keep your head down. Work on your own blog.
- Don’t get distracted by what others are doing or the latest trends.
- Do more of what works. (brings you more traffic/money/engagement)
- Do less of what doesn’t work. (social platforms that don’t convert to clicks)
- Don’t quit!
Making money with your blog is awesome. If only to justify to your family and friends that you don’t just waste time on the internet all day long. lol
You can do this! I have faith in you and your abilities to rock your blog.
Quick question: Have you considered hiring a coach instead of purchasing yet another course or tool?

Thanks Elena for this, I’ve been following you since I started blogging, almost 2 years ago and you always keep me going with your solid advice. It is a hard slog and I do get sidetracked with reading & commenting on other blogs, Insta, Twitter etc, but this is how I’m, (slowly) building a following. You have reminded me how bad I am at actually concentrating on MY blog though! I do need to write more. I am constantly thinking of ideas for posts, put them on my list then just time rolls on, hence why I have a mega list of posts to write. You’re SO right with this post – as usual! I did hire a social media coach to get me going and give me some great advice, but would love to hire a blog coach to have a really good look at my blog and tell me where I’m going wrong, (if I am, not sure) but alas, it just comes down to money 🙂 I think you’re an inspiration!! 🙂
Thanks! I know it’s so easy to get sucked into living on social media but you must set aside time for your own blog or you will never get to it. As you’ve obviously have discovered! I hope you can hire a coach in the future. It will really open your eyes and give you more clarity and focus.
Great to read some honest words about monetising your blog. I would love to try but currently we just blog about our nomadic lives and the blog is just a kind of diary.
Lots of bloggers are successful blogging about their nomadic life. Never say “just”. You write about a life many dream about.
Ah thanks Elena. I think our problem is that we are so busy living our weird and wonderful life that often the blogging takes a backseat.
Use whatever platform is easiest for you to build an audience. Like Instagram.
I am on Instagram but don’t use it very often, need to research how to use it properly in order to get more traffic to the blog.
To win at the instagram game, you must post beautiful images everyday with relevant hashtags. Do not concern yourself with click throughs to your blog in the beginning. The focus should be on getting people interested in you and what you are posting. Engagement and click throughs will eventually follow. Every social media platform is a long game. That is where the true success lies.
I’m going to give Instagram a real go I think after we get back to England. You’re becoming my guru!
I’ve been blogging seriously for two years now — and this is the best post with good guidance on monetizing that I have seen. THANKS for this. As another blogger over fifty, MUCH respect.
Thanks lady!
Congrats on all your success, my friend. Happy for you! I know you have worked hard for this. My blog will never monetize, but because of the blog, I have an e-book that makes royalties, much better writing skills, new friends and a photography hobby that I never expected!
Hi, Elena
I love how sure you are as you share your experience and wisdom! It is encouraging. My focus is following my bliss and learning about blog business along the way. I guess I’ve been afraid of putting my focus out front that I am writing outfit combinations for women over 60. The reason is that I have a youthful attitude about dressing and haven’t grown up/given up on that style. I am just being my true self though. If I’m not very personal in my writing, at least I stick to exactly who I am. Although I am entering my third year of blogging this New Year, I know I have a lot to learn. I’m working on it and will keep your advice in mind.
Thanks,
Angie
Don’t be afraid to put your focus first. There are lots of midlife women that appreciate a youthful approach to style. They will identify with you and that’s key to building a loyal audience.
I feel like I’m at a crossroads, Elena, so your post struck a nerve. I need to better define my brand and that might mean a whole new blog. I’ve been feeling discouraged and stressed. Thanks for reminding me not to quit. Maybe all I need is a change. I have hired a writing coach. What sort of coach were you referring to in your question?
Don’t be discouraged. I think it gets us ready to accept change and challenges. I was referring to a blog or business coach. Good for you for hiring a writing coach. I assume that is to help you with writing more books?
I am very new to all this, have only been blogging for 55 days and now making the move to self hosted.. i would love to make money with it but I feel I have alot to learn! thanks.
It is a lot to learn. And you will change and grow many times over. Don’t be afraid or get frustrated with the process. Money will come but it can’t be your focus. Reader satisfaction and loyalty should be your top priority in the beginning.
im blogging daily, it is alot of work, just hoping that people do keep reading and like what i write. trying to learn about DA and SEO my head hurts! thanks
